New SOTBMusic: Alessia Cara Says "Not Today"

Out of the many acts that've sprung up over the past six years of running SpeedontheBeat.com (and over ten years writing about music as a whole), I've championed quite a few of them. For example, I still believe that Big K.R.I.T. can't make a bad song, I still believe that IDK is one of the best new artists out, and I still believe that Alessia Cara has one of the most beautiful voices out there. It's that perfect mix of soulful and poppy that just makes my ears happy.

Somehow, even after her amazing debut, Know-It-All, there are still some folks sleep on the Toronto native. Or maybe they're just sleep in the more hip-hop-centric space I seem to occupy more often than not. While "Here" got a lot of burn on urban radio, most of her other tracks didn't, even though there's no denying that she can sang.

Whatever the case is, Alessia Cara's prepping for her new album The Pains of Growing, which is slated to drop on November 30. The lyric video for "Not Today" is one that I thoroughly enjoyed, and not just for the nostalgia-tinged visuals. The video features Cara in an oversized suit busting out dance moves while smoothly belting out some of the happiest sad lyrics I've heard in a while. It's a bop, but, like most Alessia Cara songs, it's a bop that's multi-layered and pretty damn sad while still being optimistic in its delivery. Think "Hey Ya" mixed with some Alanis Morrisette and sprinkled with some Amy Winehouse for good measure.
