When an artist gets a cult-like following, two things happen within the fan base. Either folks want them to continue to make the type of songs that got them on (therefore stunting their growth) or to go overly experimental, since they've proved they can handle it (if it fails, we're left with YEEZUS and albums of that ilk, sorry 'Ye). Joey Bada$$'s new track, "Ready," falls a bit into both categories.
It lacks that 95 Til Infinity sort of feel--although it still feels at home with Joey's older stuff--and it's still kind of newer ground, specifically sonically. Personally, I rock with the track because of its instrumental, Bada$$'s flow (that takes a wild-ass Angry Cole-meets-Pac-meets-Kendrick approach), and the comedy behind the "Troy Ave" line (it's funny because it's true; Lil' Durk did outsell Troy Ave).
Diss lines aside, it's a cool song. It's not close to Joey's best, but it's cool. Something to keep his name in people's mouths, alongside his (potentially) burgeoning teaching/indie education career (h/t HHDX). Could we eventually see Joey Bada$$ get on his Bun B tip? Maybe, we'll see.
